Striving to create spaces where FLINTA* people can dream and work together for a more just world

About us

Lespectra is a Sofia-based lesbian-led feminist organisation. We strive to create spaces where the FLINTA* community in Bulgaria can come together and become agents of change - by learning about our own history and present struggles, by being visible and speaking up, and sometimes, simply through the power of resistance of lesbian and queer joy.

Collective Response to Violence Against LBTI+ Women and Non-Binary People

Queer and feminist collectives, LGBTI+ organisations and activists are often the first people community members turn to for support after experiencing violence. But we don't always have the capacity, knowledge or tools to respond in a way that is effective, supports survivors and protects our own boundaries.

In 2026, Lespectra is hosting a long-term collective process focused on tackling violence against LBTI+ women and non-binary people. From February to October, we're working together with six other collectives and organisations to create practical tools for care, solidarity and protection in cases of violence based on gender and sexual orientation.

The process includes:

  • Mapping needs: finding out what collectives and organisations working with LGBTI+ people need in order to respond when someone shares an experience of violence

  • Building a protocol together: a response protocol centred on the needs of survivors

  • A public online resource: a platform to support professionals and activists

Lesbophobia: Hidden Forms of Gender-Based Violence in Bulgaria

To truly understand gender-based violence, we need to see how it intersects with other forms of discrimination and stigma. Women from marginalised groups are often more vulnerable and more likely to experience violence. The Council of Europe recognised this in a dedicated resolution on LBQ women on 3 October 2024.

In this spirit, the project explores lesbophobia as a form of gender-based violence. This matters especially now, with growing hatred in Bulgaria, recent anti-LGBTI+ legislative changes and the threat of more to come.

The project includes quantitative and qualitative research into the forms of violence LBQ women and non-binary people face in Bulgaria. It also includes a series of training sessions for the team of our feminist media outlet Vechernica, led by journalists, so that it can cover the topic with even more sensitivity and commitment

Civil Society Partnership for Impact on Rights and Values

Within this project, Lespectra leads community art and activism workshops, a community zine and an exhibition. We'll host 16 workshops that bring together art, activism and learning from one another to contribute to meaningful social change. Participants will create queer artworks for a community zine and a community exhibition will be held that showcases new forms of visibility and solidarity.
